Chapter Thirteen

SHADOW

The moment he walked in the door, I could feel his energy. Cold, like my touch.

It called to me like a flame calls a moth. Drawn to my mate, I scoured the hallways faster than the speed of the sound. He stood in the foyer, with her. Both of them were staring each other down like two cowboys ready to duel.

“Are you always this much fun at parties, Degal?” the young woman said.

I watched my mate shift his stance, the flicker of challenge in his eye. The man might be made of stone, but I know better than anyone what makes him crumble.

“I was not aware we were having a party, Jenna.”

Jenna. Her name is Jenna…

Not what I would have guessed based on her appearance. Her raven, red tipped hair, pale skin, and penchant for black gives off more of an Ophelia or Lenore.

I whisper her name, but they do not hear me. And from the way in which they stare at one another, I would bet the farm they wouldn’t hear a tornado if it blew through this very building.

A part of me feels content with this knowledge. After Virginia left this world, I feared it was Flint who it hit the hardest, but Degal never truly dealt with it at all.

Instead, he vowed to watch over the lands, and pulled away from Flint and I to the recesses of his carriage house. So many times I longed to go to him—to both of them. But without my source of sustenance, I was fading. It took everything I had to reserve my energy, until my partners packed up the remains of their business and high-tailed it out of Ashwood.

And with the mines dredging through the wood, a grief stricken monster could devour his way through victims, never filling the void which had formed in his tender, capable heart.

I watched as Jenna led my naughty boy upstairs, the sight filling me with glee. I’ve always been a betting man; taking risks that in the end always paid off, and paid off well. I know a winning horse when I see one, and the way they have been staring at each other says everything they won’t say out loud. Quite frankly, it wouldn’t be the first time I’d watched Degal with another, and if I’m being honest, it would not be the first time I’d watched Jenna come to pleasure herself.

I’ve seen people come through this place, more so in the last two weeks than I have in ages, and finally someone has chosen to stay. The nights are far too long, and sticky with warmth that clings to the walls. But now…now there is life teeming in these walls again, and I am drawn to it. To her.

I know Jenna feels my touch as much as I can feel hers. She has not made any demands of me, but she has not shied away from my nightly visits either, and I think maybe even if she will not say it out loud, she enjoys my company, perhaps it makes her feel less…alone.
